my gaze never sees
your story of hot magma
only placid mounds

    • I find it fascinating that I “know” that huge deposits of hot magma boil beneath the volcanoes I look at every day, and that they were formed by the flow of this magma, yet what I see out my window are quiet, seemingly “placid mounds.” The gap between my intellectual and sensory understandings in this case is huge and the poem, from my perspective, presents the sense of wonder I feel about that gap.
